#1: Aging
Aging is the most common cause of saggy breasts. As skin loses elasticity and gravity continues to pull down on the breasts, this eventually causes sagging for most women. Though, every woman will see different changes related to aging. Some may see only minor sagging while others may see more severe ptosis.#2: Weight Changes
Weight changes–gain or loss–can contribute to or worsen breast sagging. With weight loss, extra skin can cause breast sagging and result in unwanted volume loss. Weight gain can increase the volume in the breasts, which can also cause sagging. When combined with aging and other factors, weight changes can largely affect breast ptosis.#3: Smoking
Smoking causes the premature breakdown of the body’s structures. It limits collagen production, thins the skin, and leads to loss of elasticity earlier in life. It can also overall worsen the natural aging of your skin and breasts. If you quit smoking before this occurs, you can slow or sometimes even reverse this. While exercise improves posture and strength, only surgery can move the nipple position and remove extra skin. In Seattle, we customize plans—from lift‑only to lift with implants—based on your anatomy and goals.
FAQs
What causes breasts to sag?
Common factors include aging and gravity, skin elasticity loss from sun exposure or genetics, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding changes, and larger natural breast size. Supportive bras and stable weight can help slow progression but won’t replace surgical lifting.
Can exercise or creams lift sagging breasts?
Exercise strengthens chest muscles and can improve posture, which may make breasts appear slightly perkier, but it doesn’t tighten stretched skin or elevate the nipple position. Creams can improve skin feel but won’t create a true lift.
When should I consider a breast lift?
If the nipple sits at or below the breast fold or points downward, and you’re unhappy with shape or position, a lift can restore contour. We’ll assess skin quality, areola position, and volume to recommend lift alone or lift with implants.
Will a lift make me smaller or larger?
A lift reshapes and elevates without primarily changing volume. Some patients feel slightly smaller due to firmer contour. If you want more fullness, we can discuss combining a lift with augmentation; for less volume, a lift with reduction may fit.
How do scars and recovery look?
Incisions vary by technique (periareolar, vertical, or anchor). Scars fade over time with proper care. Most patients return to desk work in about a week and resume exercise gradually. We’ll provide scar care and follow‑ups tailored to your plan.
