The chances of experiencing an implant rupture after your breast augmentation procedure have been greatly reduced thanks to modern engineering, which has allowed of the creation of stronger and much more durable implants. However, implant ruptures can still occur for multiple reasons, such as:
- Capsular contracture
- Implant overfilling
- Natural wear and tear
- Physical trauma to the implant
- Surgical damage
Different types of implant will produce different symptoms when a rupture occurs. Saline implants are filled with a sterile solution of saltwater. When a saline implant ruptures, the implant will be noticeably deflated and misshapen, as the saline solution will have leaked out and been absorbed by the body. The saline solution is not harmful to the body, but the silicone shell of the implant will need to be surgically removed.Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. This is denser than liquid saline, and because of this, you may not even notice if a rupture has occurred because no symptoms may be presented (known as a silent leak). In some cases, however, the breast shape may be affected. An MRI will need to be performed to determine if a silicone implant has ruptured. A ruptured silicone implant may also produce some pain and discomfort.Gummy bear implants are a newer type of implant and are already quite popular. They’re made from a much more cohesive silicone gel than normal silicone implants. This gel is specifically designed to retain its shape after an implant rupture.
